If you visited Venice at least once, you know well that prices may sometime be over-the-top: it is well acknowledged that a lunch in a bar/pub situated in the most fancy ‘sestrieri’ (Venetian boroughs), might cost you an arm and a leg.
We therefore suggest you a yummy and extremely cheap alternative: the ‘BACARI’, otherwise known as those traditional Venetian taverns where you will have the chance to taste authentic local finest delicacies, better if matched with a ‘ombra’ (glass) of wine.
While eating in these charming diners, we had the feeling time had stopped. The menu choice is excellent as much as affordable!
Within all the taverns we tried out, we advise you to check out the five ones we loved the most. Furthermore, if you never experienced a proper tour of the ‘bacari’ we strongly advise you to add it on your checklist.
Fancy restaurants? No, thanks. Much better ‘cicheti’ and ‘spritz’!
1) Bacareto da Lele
Campo dei Tolentini, 183
The most famous ‘bacaro’ in Venice. Very cheap.
2) Cicheteria veneziana da Luca e Fred
Rio Terà San Leonardo, 1518, Sestiere Cannaregio
If you come from the railway station, this ‘bacaro’ is a mandatory stop-over. Snacks and drinks starting from 1.50€. Have a toast one after the other!
3) El sbarlefo
Salizada del Pistor, 4558, VE
Their own speciality? The either deep-fried or creamed salted codfish: simply mouth-watering! Drinks of the house around 1.50€
4) Cantine del vino già schiavi
Fondamenta Nani, 992, Dorsoduro
Recommended for either a quick happy hour or a dinner with friend. Excellent quality/price ratio: a glass of wine will only cost you 1.00€.
5) Osteria dai Zemei
San Polo, 1045/B, 30125 Venezia
‘Cicheti’ and sandwiches between 1.80-2.00€ to be tasted in an atmosphere cheered up by classical music reverberating throughout the whole place.
Do you want to try alternative cuisine? Try the kashèr food.
