Summer at Lido di Venezia

Summer has arrived and the lure of the sea and the beach can also be felt in Venice! So why not spend a few days at the Lido?

Just 15 minutes by vaporetto from San Marco, it is in fact an ideal destination for an unusual and fascinating beach holiday. Let’s take a look at it together!

Summer at Lido Venezia

The Lido of VIPs

The Lido is above all the island of the VIPs, or at least it is today, in the month of September when the floodlights of the Venice Film Festival are switched on.

Its main attractions are linked to this internationally renowned event, which transforms Venice into a nerve centre of the international jet-set, complete with a red carpet and photographers looking for the perfect shot.

But this golden island, through which the greatest actors in the world have passed, was already the most chic place to spend the summer since the beginning of the twentieth century.

In the midst of the Belle Epoque, with the opening of luxurious hotels such as Excelsior or Des Bains, high society met here for endless summers of evenings and parties.

    An island to discover

Beyond its worldliness, however, the Lido also gives us fairytale views and beautiful walks to discover the region.

For example, thanks to the beautiful Liberty villas that can be admired along the great viale Santa Maria Elisabetta, we can fully immerse ourselves in the magical atmosphere of the 1920s.

Or walking in the area around the Church of San Niccolò and the village of Malamocco, we can find evidence of ancient villages: a real cross-section of other times, which bears all the traces of the strong link with the Serenissima.

For those who love nature, obviously you cannot pass on the chance to take a regenerating walk between the long sandy beaches that are interrupted only to the south to make room for the Murazzi, or up to the long dams that line the two mouths of the port of Lido and Malamocco and can also be travelled by bike.

And even further to the Alberoni, an oasis of the WWF, where the main characters on the scene are endangered birds and turtles looking for a way to the sea.

Where to stay at Lido di Venezia

The choice of where to stay at the Lido di Venezia is very wide and there is something for all budgets: from luxurious 4 or 5 star hotels to simple family-run hotels.

You can also find delicious B&Bs, villas furnished with vintage furniture and modern apartments.

The best area to stay in at the Lido of Venice is the one that is simply called “Lido”, at the Santa Maria Elisabetta vaporetto stop: it is the easiest to reach and is also the area where you will find the most accommodation, bars, restaurants and shops.

How to get to the Lido

To get to the Lido from Venice with the vaporetto there are 8 lines:

      • Line 1, whose route runs along the Grand Canal and which serves all of the stops
      • Line 6, which is the fastest to take in Piazzale Roma
      • the “city tour” lines  5.1 and 5.2
      • Line 14 from San Marco, line 10 from Zattere and line 17 from Tronchetto
      • The N line, the only one that runs at night.
