An unprecedented exhibition about Picasso will enrich the rooms of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection from the 26th of August 2017 to the 7th of January 2018. The brand new Project Rooms of Palazzo Venier will actually be the stage on where the exhibition “Picasso. Sulla Spiaggia” (“Picasso. On The Beach”) will become alive to celebrate the cubist artist’s genius. A real artistic tidbit that I feel strongly advised to those who love art and those who know how to appreciate art in every way.
Picasso at Guggenheim: the exhibition “Sulla Spiaggia”
Created thanks to the collaboration with the Musée National Picasso in Paris and curated by Luca Massimo Barbero, the exhibition-dossier “Picasso. Sulla Spiaggia” is based on the charming relationship between Pablo Picasso and the Mediterranean sea.
After a pondered and accurate selection, three paintings were chosen, together with ten drawings and a sculpture all realised by Picasso between February and December 1937. The aim is to understand and unravel the intense bond between the Spanish genius and the Mediterranean, always present throughout his artistic career: from his roots in Spain to the period of time spent in France, going through the relationships with other artists and art branches inspired by Mare Nostrum.
Picasso at Guggenheim: “La Baignade” painting
The exhibition, set up in the Project Rooms, focuses around the painting “On The Beach” (La Baignade) which dates back to the 12th of February 1937: a mixture of oil, conté and charcoal techniques on a canvas. Symbol of the strong and deep Mediterranean heritage of the Iberian painter, it was also one of the most loved pieces by the American art collector Peggy Guggenheim.
Picasso was really into the theme of the beach: there are several works representing this setting. The experts think that, observing the images and the moving naked figures, the artist drew his inspiration from Giorgione, Tiziano, Cézanne, Matisse and Renoir.

“Picasso. Sulla Spiaggia” is open every day (except Tuesdays), starting from the 26th of August at the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni museum. The full price ticket is 15 euros, for people over 65 years old is 13 euros, students (up to 26 years old) pay 9 euros. The access is free for children (up to 10 years old) and for members.
