Venice is one of the world’s most romantic destinations. Its charming calli, traditional bacari, the famous Piazza San Marco, and the gondolas gently gliding along the canals create the perfect setting for couples looking to share a special moment. The city’s unique atmosphere, built entirely on water, makes it a magical place to explore especially with a loved one. Visiting Venice is something everyone should experience at least once, whether for an anniversary, a special celebration, or a weekend getaway.

Planning Your Trip: How to Get to Venice

You can reach Venice by car, train, or plane. If you’re flying, you’ll land either at Aeroporto Marco Polo or Treviso Airport. In both cases, we recommend a direct shuttle service that takes you non-stop to Piazzale Roma, the main access point to the historical center. Once at Piazzale Roma, you’re ready to begin your journey through the Venetian lagoon.

How to Reach Piazza San Marco: On Foot or by Vaporetto

The heart of Venice is Piazza San Marco, located in the city’s most iconic district. From Piazzale Roma, you can reach it either by walking or using public transport. The most classic and scenic option is the vaporetto, Venice’s waterbus, which runs along the Canal Grande. At Piazzale Roma, head to the pier on the left when facing the canal, and take the vaporetto in the direction of Rialto Vallaresso. You’ll have two lines to choose from:

  • Linea 1, which makes several stops and is perfect if you want to get off and explore points of interest along the way.
  • Linea 2, a faster service aimed at those heading straight to the center.

Along the journey, you’ll see many architectural gems from the water: Ponte della Costituzione, Fontego dei Turchi, Ca’ Pesaro, Ca’ d’Oro, Ponte di Rialto, Ca’ Foscari, Gallerie dell’Accademia, and more, until you reach the Vallaresso stop.

From there, walk along Calle Vallaresso, turn right, and you’ll soon reach Palazzo Correr, which opens directly onto Piazza San Marco.

A Walk Through the Calli of Venice

If you prefer to explore on foot, it takes around 30 minutes to walk from Piazzale Roma to Piazza San Marco. But with bridges, hidden corners, and charming sights at every turn, don’t be surprised if it takes a bit longer it’s time well spent.

You can use a walking GPS or a paper map to find your way. Look for the typical yellow or white signs posted on building walls that guide you toward San Marco or Rialto.

Once you cross Ponte della Costituzione, you’ll spot Stazione Santa Lucia on your left. From here, you have a few route options. The most straightforward path is via Strada Nova, which is mostly linear. But for a more scenic and authentic experience, take a richer route:

Cross Ponte degli Scalzi, continue through Campo San Giacomo dell’Orio, then Campo Santa Maria Mater Domini, and head toward Rialto. Once you cross the iconic Ponte di Rialto, go through Campo San Bartolomeo and walk along le Mercerie a lively set of streets that lead directly to Piazza San Marco.

Discovering Piazza San Marco

Piazza San Marco is Venice’s only true “piazza” (the others are called campi, campielli, or piazzali), and it measures 180 meters long and 70 meters wide. Napoleon famously called it “the most elegant drawing room in Europe,” and it’s easy to see why.

Here you’ll find some of Venice’s most iconic landmarks: Basilica di San Marco, Palazzo Ducale, the Campanile, the Torre dell’Orologio, along with historic cafés and fascinating museums often accompanied by live classical music from outdoor orchestras.

Just steps away, in Campo San Maurizio, you’ll find the renowned antique market, held five weekends a year. Active since 1970, it’s a haven for collectors and vintage lovers, offering rare items from the 17th to the 20th century.

Ready to Head Back?

Once you’ve explored the city, return to Piazzale Roma. Make sure to board the correct bus so you don’t miss your departure. Use a handy map to navigate and enjoy your smooth return trip.

Safe travels!
