The 60th International Art Exhibition opens its doors on April 20th, introducing the theme “Foreigners Everywhere”. Let’s discover together the innovations and must-see works of this extraordinary artistic event.
The Theme
Curator Adriano Pedrosa guides us on a journey through works that celebrate cultural diversity and inclusion. With a focus on immigrant, expatriate, and indigenous artists, the 2024 edition of the Venice Art Biennale offers a unique perspective on the concepts of belonging and estrangement.
The title “Foreigners Everywhere” is drawn from a series of works created since 2004 by the collective Claire Fontaine, born in Paris and based in Palermo. These works consist of neon sculptures of various colors bearing the words “Foreigners Everywhere” in different languages.
The expression was in turn taken from the name of a Turin-based collective that in the early 2000s fought against racism and xenophobia in Italy.
“‘Foreigners Everywhere’ has more than one meaning,” explains Adriano Pedrosa. “Firstly, it intends to convey that wherever one goes and wherever one finds oneself, foreigners will always be encountered: they are/we are everywhere. Secondly, regardless of one’s location, deep down, one is always truly a foreigner in a super-globalized society like the contemporary one.”
Special Projects and Performances
Immerse yourself in the outdoor projects and performances taking place during the pre-opening days and the final weekend of the event: dynamic and engaging interactions that enhance the artistic experience of the Biennale.
International and Multicultural
With the participation of 88 countries and the addition of four new nations, the 2024 Venice Biennale provides a global perspective on contemporary art. The exhibition spans across the Central Pavilion, the Gardens, and the Arsenale, featuring two distinct nuclei: the “Contemporary Nucleus” and the “Historical Nucleus.” As a guiding principle, the 2024 Venice Biennale has prioritized artists who have never previously participated in the International Exhibition. Explore the works of artists from around the world and be inspired by cultural diversity.
The 2024 Venice Biennale promises to be a unique opportunity to explore contemporary art, celebrating diversity and inclusion through extraordinary and engaging works.
