The Venice Film Festival has arrived at its 79th edition and this year it will take place at the Lido di Venezia from 31 August to 10 September 2022.
After two difficult years marred by the Covid-19 pandemic, this seems to be the year of normality and the organisers are working relentlessly to allow the event to return to what it always was, enjoyed and attended by people from all over the world.
The history of the Venice Film Festival
The history of the Festival dates back almost a hundred years. First organised in 1932, it is now the most prestigious film festival in the world and attracts top-class personalities and films year after year.
The event is held inside the Palazzo del Cinema, a building located on the Marconi promenade. The winners in each category are awarded the Golden Lion, a statuette shaped after the landmark symbol of the city of Venice, the Lion of San Marco.
Each year during the festival period, at least 140 films are screened, chosen from features, shorts or documentaries, which are judged as suitable by a special commission of judges.
The event has always been distinguished by the prominent personalities who attend, making it also a glamorous showcase. Visitors can still gain access with a special ticket.

On 30 August, the silent film Stella Dallas, which has been restored by MoMA New York, will be screened in the Sala Darsena.
There will be 5 Italian films competing for a Golden Lion, including Il Signore delle Formiche by Gianni Amelio, who won the coveted statuette in 1998. This will be followed by Luca Guadagnino‘s presentation of his feature film Bones and All, before Emanuele Crialese‘s L’immensità, which stars Penelope Cruz in its cast.
The last two productions are Chiara by renowned director Susanna Nicchiarelli and Monica, which was directed exclusively by Andrea Pallaoro.
Other notable films are The Whale, directed by Darren Aronofsky and featuring Sadie Sink (famous for Max from Stranger Things), Bardo and The Son of Zeller, described by Zeller herself as a spiritual sequel to her previous film from 2020.
Leading the jury of experts who will decide the winners in the various categories is actress Julianne Moore.
This year there is also a virtual reality zone dedicated to the festival where it will be possible to watch a documentary filmed exclusively with this technique, as well as to try out this technology for panoramic tours of the lagoon.
How to get to Venice
To reach Venice and attend the Venice Film Festival 2022, after having purchased the titles or tickets you are interested in, there are several options, depending of course on where you are from.
The car is a very useful means of transport for those who live far away, however it should be considered that cars are not suitable for use in the lagoon and, instead, could become an inconvenience with parking outside the city.
Arriving by train or plane is without doubt much more convenient, particularly as Venice is well served by connecting shuttles. More specifically, the ATVO transport service provides several bus lines connecting the lagoon city with Venice and Treviso airport, or with the more tourist-oriented locations in eastern Veneto.
