It happened several times I found myself in Venice while the Carnival was taking place, losing myself within the partying crowd or staring in amazement from below at the spectacular\u00a0\u2018Volo dell\u2019Angelo\u2019<\/b>. While the Carnival is on, the city fills itself up with\u00a0partying people, colours and entertainments.<\/b>\u00a0It is really something to feast your eyes on.<\/p>\n
Wearing costumes<\/b>\u00a0is surely one of the most fun amusements of the whole Carnival experience: at least once a year you can choose to take on someone else\u2019s features and no seriously at all. This is what proper fun is made of!<\/p>\n
The carnival and the costumes are the symbols of Venice<\/b>\u00a0in the world now, for collective consciousness, but their history is tightly bound to the ancient customs and tradition of the city of Venice. Charmed by the most original event of the year, I decided to leave behind the most crowded places in favour of the more sheltered alleys, where I went to seek for the secrets about the\u00a0ancient art of making Venetian masks.<\/b><\/p>\n
Which masks were the first ones to be used?<\/b>\u00a0Among the first masks to be worn in Venice there is the \u2018Larva\u2019, a white mask with a long beak replacing the nose, and the\u00a0\u2018Bauta\u2019<\/b>, which usually comes with a black cape and is known as the most traditional one. Instead, Venetian women were usually wearing the\u00a0\u2018Moretta\u2019<\/b>, an oval, black velvet mask, worn with the help of a linchpin in the mouth.<\/p>\n
Entering a really small shop at the corner of an alley, I was welcomed by the two owners who also master this crafting art by devotedly\u00a0following the same techniques as applied centuries ago<\/b>. The manufacturing process goes through three different phases: the creation of a rough model, the whitening and the embellishment.<\/p>\n
First of all, in order to create a papier-mache mask,\u00a0the artisan builds the mould<\/b>, made with glue and shredded paper also bespoken for the specific model of the mask. Next, he has layered the pieces of paper one after the other, visually focusing on the first one.<\/p>\n
By the end of this process, he has extracted the mask from the mould to let it dry:\u00a0here there is the creation taking shape.<\/b><\/p>\n
After having the eyes and the outlines cut out with the shears, the artisan kept on with the\u00a0whitening of the mask<\/b>. Good quality wall-paint is usually used and applied twice: the first time as thick as it comes and the second time diluted for a smoother outcome.<\/p>\n
Once the whitening had been done, this enchanting manufacture\u00a0was ready to be embellished:<\/b>\u00a0we had come to the most interesting phase of the whole process. With the precision of a Carthusian monk, the master artisan sketched with a pencil some drawing outlines for the face and then traced them over with\u00a0Indian ink, acrylics and golden embellishments.<\/b>\u00a0A layer of bitumen completed the art piece, providing the mask with its typical ancient look.<\/p>\n
It has been a moving and intense experience, through which I learnt about the real local Venetian craftsmanship. I would suggest this same experience to everybody! Il bello \u00e8 proprio quello!<\/span><\/p> Il carnevale e la maschera sono ormai, nell\u2019immaginario collettivo, i simboli di Venezia nel mondo<\/strong>, ma la loro storia \u00e8 strettamente collegata alle usanze e costumi della Venezia antica. Affascinato dall\u2019evento pi\u00f9 originale dell\u2019anno, ho deciso di abbandonare i luoghi pi\u00f9 affollati a favore delle calli pi\u00f9 riparate, dove sono andato alla scoperta dei segreti dell\u2019antica arte di produzione delle maschere veneziane. <\/span><\/p> Quali sono le prime a essere state utilizzate? Tra le prime maschere in uso a Venezia vi \u00e8 la larva, maschera bianca con un becco lungo<\/strong> in corrispondenza del naso e la bauta che, accompagnata da un mantello nero, costituiva la maschera tradizionale. Le donne veneziane usavano, invece, la moretta, maschera ovale in velluto nero<\/strong> che si indossava reggendo un perno in bocca.<\/span><\/p> Entrando in una piccola bottega all\u2019angolo di una calle, mi hanno accolto i due proprietari che realizzano queste opere d\u2019arte seguendo fedelmente la tecnica di secoli fa. La lavorazione segue tre fasi: la preparazione del modello grezzo, l\u2019imbiancatura e la decorazione.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Molte volte mi \u00e8 capitato di andare a Venezia durante il periodo di Carnevale<\/strong>, perdermi tra la folla festosa o osservare col naso all\u2019ins\u00f9 l\u2019evento coreografico del Volo dell\u2019Angelo<\/strong>. Durante il Carnevale, la citt\u00e0 si riempie di persone festanti, colori, attrazioni di ogni tipo e la gioia si spande nell\u2019aria. <\/span><\/p>
