I have always admired them, while they were graciously sailing with elegance through the canals, like they were floating inside a dream. I am talking about\u00a0gondolas<\/strong>, the typical boats of the lagoon renowned all around the world.<\/p>\n

Finding out how these particular means of transportation are brought into the world has been a real feast for the eyes, nonetheless a chance to get to know an art that, little by little, though it should be worth of being preserved, seems condemned to disappear. At sunset we arrived at the \u2018squero<\/strong><\/a>\u2019, which literally means\u00a0\u2018construction yard\u2019 or \u2018set square\u2019<\/strong>. It is indeed a magical place where the \u2018squeraroli\u2019 build with their own hands this special boat with which gondoliers sail through the canals every day.<\/p>\n

How does a gondola come to life?<\/strong>\u00a0This manufacture dates back to 1610, an age in which the master artisans founded a real and proper manufacturing school. The techniques used nowadays are the same as the ones employed centuries ago.<\/p>\n

With a flame alimented by a swamp cane, the \u2018squeraroli\u2019 curve the ply of wood, rendering its traditional concave shape. The cradle where the ribs structure is placed is a matrix where the same gondola\u2019s framework is inserted. Every watercraft is\u00a011 metres long and built with eight different types of wood<\/strong>: the outcome of an ancient knowledge that has sedimented throughout the centuries.<\/p>\n

The most exciting moment of the whole visit was to discover\u00a0the secret behind the \u2018f\u00e8rro\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0(the unique decoration) on the bow, the most fascinating part of the gondola. Did you know where its traditional curved comb shape comes from? Every element of the \u2018f\u00e8rro\u2019 is a symbol of a\u00a0different historic location in Venice<\/strong>\u00a0(Grand Canal, San Marco, Rialto bridge, the six \u2018sestrieri\u2019 \u2013 the boroughs of Venice), whilst the decorations represent its islands. The most prominent part is called \u2018cappello del doge<\/strong>\u2019 because it reminds of the typical hat of the chief-of-state lordship ruling on the city of Venice.<\/p>\n

It has been an\u00a0unusual visit<\/a>, where I found out about the history and all the secrets behind the techniques of one of the most loved watercraft in the whole world. Ready for some sailing?<\/p>\n

Le ho sempre ammirate mentre con grazia ed eleganza solcavano i canali, sospese come in un sogno. Sto parlando delle <\/span>gondole<\/b>, le imbarcazioni tipiche della laguna famose in tutto il mondo. <\/span><\/p>

Scoprire come nascono questi mezzi di trasporto \u00e8 stata una vera meraviglia per gli occhi, nonch\u00e8 un\u2019opportunit\u00e0 per conoscere un\u2019arte che sta via via scomparendo e che vale la pena conservare. Al tramonto siamo arrivati nello <\/span>squero<\/b><\/a>, che significa letteralmente <\/span>\u201ccantiere\u201d o \u201csquadra\u201d<\/b>, un luogo magico dove gli squeraroli costruiscono con le loro mani il mezzo con cui i gondolieri navigano ogni giorno per i canali. <\/span><\/p>

Coma nasce una gondola?<\/b> Questa manifattura risale al 1610, epoca in cui i maestri artigiani avevano fondato una vera e propria scuola. Le tecniche utilizzate al giorno d\u2019oggi sono le stesse di secoli fa. <\/span><\/p>

Con una fiamma alimentata da una canna di palude gli squeraroli curvano la tavola di legno, dandole la tradizionale forma concava. La culla dove si mettono le costolature \u00e8 una matrice dove viene infilata l\u2019ossatura della gondola. Ogni imbarcazione \u00e8 <\/span>lunga<\/b> 11 metri e realizzata con 8 tipi di legni<\/b> diversi, frutto di una sapienza antica sedimentata da secoli. <\/span><\/p>

Il momento pi\u00f9 entusiasmante della visita \u00e8 stato scoprire cosa si nasconde dietro il<\/span> ferro di prua<\/b>, la parte pi\u00f9 suggestiva della gondola. Lo sapevi da dove nasce la sua tradizionale forma a pettine ricurvo? Tutti gli elementi del ferro simboleggiano <\/span>i luoghi storici di Venezia<\/b> (canal Grande, s. Marco, ponte di Rialto, sei sestrieri), mentre i fregi sono le sue isole. La parte pi\u00f9 evidente \u00e8 invece detta <\/span>\u201ccappello del doge\u201d<\/b> perch\u00e8 ricorda il copricapo del sovrano veneziano. <\/span><\/p>

E\u2019 stata una visita insolita, dove ho scoperto tutti i segreti della tecnica e della storia di una delle imbarcazioni pi\u00f9 amate al mondo. Ci facciamo un giro?<\/span>
