The bridge of Sighs was built according to the\u00a0Baroque style<\/strong>, using stones from Istria, known as a calcareous microcrystalline, solid and barely porous ones, particularly resistant to the erosion caused by the salt.\u00a0You can notice the figure of the Justice with the\u00a0<\/strong>doge\u00a0<\/i><\/strong>Grimani\u2019s family<\/strong>\u00a0crest below it, right in the middle of the external facade.<\/p>\n

Why the name \u2018Bridge of Sighs\u2019<\/h3>\n

Perhaps you are wondering\u00a0why it\u2019s been called \u2018Bridge of Sighs\u2019.<\/strong>\u00a0The prisoners, usually handcuffed while crossing the bridge, were probably having one last look at the sky and, while giving it up,\u00a0heaved the last sigh of their now lost freedom<\/strong>. La storia del Ponte dei Sospiri<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n

Nel 1577 Palazzo Ducale fu devastato da un incendio che costrinse il Senato della Repubblica a spostare le famose prigioni veneziane, i Pozzi e i Piombi<\/u><\/a><\/strong>. Le nuove celle, pi\u00f9 ampie e sicure, furono collocate sulla riva di fronte del Rio di Palazzo<\/strong> e rimasero in uso per secoli fino al 1919. Nel 1614 l\u2019allora doge Marino Grimani ordin\u00f2 all\u2019architetto Antonio Contin<\/strong> di edificare un ponte che congiungesse le sale delle Magistratura direttamente alle prigioni, per trasferire i colpevoli subito dopo la sentenza<\/strong>. Il Ponte fu costruito secondo i dettami dello stile barocco con pietra d\u2019Istria<\/strong>, una roccia calcarea microcristallina e compatta con bassa porosit\u00e0, molto resistente all\u2019erosione salina. Sulla facciata esterna, al centro, puoi vedere raffigurata la Giustizia <\/strong>e subito sotto puoi scorgere lo stemma del doge Grimani.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n
