\u201cNothing earthly can be placed above the synagogue\u201d: it is for this reason that the Synagogues of Venice are often placed on the buildings\u2019 top floor,\u00a0hidden and unrecognisable from the outside.<\/b>\u00a0The only signs of their presence are\u00a0the 5 windows in a row\u00a0<\/b>(which recall the books of Torah) and the writings in Hebrew on the walls. It is only thanks to\u00a0a guided tour<\/strong><\/a>, in facts, that I could find out about the\u00a0history and culture\u00a0<\/b>of one of the most fascinating places in Venice: the Jewish ghetto. And now I will tell you about my discoveries.<\/p>\n

The Jewish Ghetto in Venice: the history<\/h3>\n

Think about it, the ghetto in Venice is the most ancient in the world: it was established on the\u00a029<\/b>th<\/b>\u00a0of March 1516<\/b>; it was the place where Venetians of Jewish religion had been isolated for several years, until Napoleone\u2019s edict ended this separation.<\/p>\n

Do you know where the term \u201cghetto\u201d comes from?\u00a0<\/b>I bet no! The word comes curiously from jetting, casting: in this area of the city, in fact, before the Jews arrived,\u00a0there were some cannon foundries<\/b>\u00a0transferred to the Arsenal in 1390.<\/p>\n

The Jewish people who live there nowadays are only a few, but the population reached the number of\u00a05000 people\u00a0<\/b>back in times.\u00a0Nobody could go out from it<\/b>, apart from Jewish doctors appointed for healing sick people outside the ghetto.<\/p>\n

The Jewish ghetto: the history of Synagogues<\/h3>\n

If you want to start your journey from the most ancient Synagogue -as I did- you must start from the\u00a0German Synagogue,\u00a0<\/b>which dates back to the 1500 and is mostly attended by\u00a0Ashkenazi Jewish people<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Following with the journey to discover the places of worship of the Jewish Neighbourhood in Venice, I acknowledged that the\u00a0most simple among the actual Synagogues is the Italian one<\/b>, with an essential structure which allows the light to pass through very easily. This is the gloomiest among the Venetian Synagogues and its edification\u00a0dates back to 1575<\/b>.<\/p>\n

In the end, if you have some time to be spared, the\u00a0Levantina one and the Ponentina one too\u00a0<\/b>are worth a visit: the former was being restored with different interventions throughout the centuries, while the latter is considered the most important among the synagogues which are the actual proof of the Jewish presence in Venice. Its foundation dates back to\u00a0the second half of the XVI century.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cNon pu\u00f2 esserci nulla di terreno al di sopra della sinagoga\u201d<\/b>: \u00e8 per questo che le Sinagoghe di Venezia sono situate spesso all\u2019ultimo piano degli edifici, <\/span>nascoste e irriconoscibili <\/b>dall\u2019esterno. Gli unici segnali della loro presenza sono le 5<\/strong><\/span> finestre allineate<\/b> (che richiamano i libri della Torah) e le scritte in ebraico sui muri. E\u2019 solo grazie a una visita guidata<\/u><\/a><\/strong>, infatti, che ho potuto cogliere l'essenza, le particolarit\u00e0 e i dettagli di uno luoghi pi\u00f9 affascinanti di Venezia: <\/span>il ghetto ebraico<\/b>. Ora ti racconto <\/span>cosa ho scoperto.<\/b><\/p>

Ghetto ebraico di Venezia: la storia<\/h3>

Pensa, il Ghetto ebraico di Venezia <\/span>\u00e8 il pi\u00f9 antico del mondo<\/b>: venne istituito infatti <\/span>il 29 marzo del 1516<\/b>; per molti secoli era il luogo dove gli ebrei veneziani vivevano segregati, finch\u00e8 l\u2019editto di Napoleone non mise fine alla separazione.<\/span><\/p>

Sai da dove deriva il termine \u201cghetto\u201d?<\/b> Scommetto di no! La parola deriva curiosamente da getto, colata: in quest\u2019area della citt\u00e0, infatti, prima che gli ebrei arrivassero, esistevano alcune fonderie di cannoni trasferite all\u2019Arsenale nel 1390.<\/span><\/p>

Oggi gli ebrei che vi abitano sono pochi, ma un tempo la popolazione arrivava anche a contare <\/span>5000 persone.<\/b> Nessuno poteva uscirvi<\/b>, tranne i medici ebrei incaricati di curare i malati.<\/span><\/p>

Ghetto ebraico di Venezia: le Sinagoghe<\/h3>

Se vuoi iniziare il tuo viaggio dalla sinagoga pi\u00f9 antica devi cominciare, come ho fatto io, dalla <\/span>Todesca<\/b>, che risale al 1500 ed \u00e8 frequentata per la maggior parte da <\/span>ebrei ashkenaziti.<\/b><\/p>

Continuando col viaggio alla scoperta dei luoghi di culto del Quartiere Ebraico di Venezia, ho capito che che <\/span>la pi\u00f9 semplice tra le sinagoghe esistenti \u00e8 quella Italiana<\/b>, con una struttura essenziale da cui entra facilmente la luce del sole. Questa \u00e8 la pi\u00f9 austera tra le sinagoghe veneziane e la sua edificazione risale al <\/span>1575<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>

Infine, se ti avanzer\u00e0 del tempo, meritano una visita anche <\/span>la Levantina e la Ponentina<\/b>: la prima \u00e8 stata oggetto di vari interventi di restauro nel corso dei secoli, mentre la seconda \u00e8 considerata <\/span>la pi\u00f9 importante tra le sinagoghe <\/b>che testimoniano la presenza ebraica a Venezia. La sua fondazione <\/span>risale alla seconda met\u00e0 del 16\u00b0secolo.<\/b><\/p>
