Have you ever wondered how houses are built in Venice? Obviously, on the water!<\/strong>\u00a0What characterizes them are the so-called indirect perimeter foundations, through poles that are fixed along the perimeter walls of the building.<\/p>\n The stakes driven into the ground rest on an underground layer of solid earth,\u00a0called caranto or sedimentary clay<\/strong>, compact and resistant, about six to seven meters deep. The foundations rest in turn on this series of pine, larch or oak poles with a diameter of about thirty centimeters, placed at a very short distance from each other.<\/p>\n And if the caranto layer is very deep?<\/strong>\u00a0Compaction technique is used: around nine poles per square meter are planted in the ground along the entire area of the planned building. In this way the surface is compacted and made stable: natural soil is replaced by artificial soil.<\/p>\n The caranto, however, is less resistant than the rock, so\u00a0the whole city of Venice is as if it floated on a sort of deep swamp<\/strong>, and it is expected that its buildings will be destined to sink more and more over the years.<\/p>\n On the layer of perimeter wooden poles are then placed the real foundations, made up of\u00a0the stone of Istria<\/strong><\/a>, a rock coming from the nearby Adriatic peninsula,\u00a0with very low porosity and a high impermeability<\/strong>. The layers of stones must reach a level of safety above the average level of the tides. Le fondamenta poggiano a loro volta su questa serie di pali di pino, larice o quercia<\/strong> e del diametro di una trentina di centimetri, collocati a brevissima distanza tra loro.<\/span><\/p>\r\n E se lo strato di caranto si trova ad un\u2019elevata profondit\u00e0?<\/strong> Si utilizza la tecnica del costipamento: si piantano nel terreno circa nove pali per metro quadrato lungo tutta l'area dell'edificio in progetto. In questo modo la superficie viene compattata e resa stabile: il terreno naturale viene sostituito da un terreno artificiale.<\/span><\/p>\r\n Il caranto per\u00f2 \u00e8 meno resistente della roccia, dunque l'intera citt\u00e0 di Venezia \u00e8 come se galleggiasse su una sorta di palude profonda<\/strong>, e si prevede che i suoi edifici saranno destinati a inabissarsi sempre di pi\u00f9 nel corso degli anni.<\/span><\/p>\r\n Sullo strato di pali lignei perimetrali<\/strong> sono poi poste le vere e propria fondamenta, costituite a Venezia da pietra d'Istria<\/a><\/u><\/strong>, una roccia proveniente dalla vicina penisola adriatica, con bassissima porosit\u00e0 ed un'elevata impermeabilit\u00e0. Gli strati di pietre devono raggiungere un livello di sicurezza sopra quello medio delle maree.
