Have you ever wondered why Venice, the floating city par excellence, has always been nicknamed the \u201cSerenissima\u201d?<\/h3>\n

Very often we use words or idioms without thinking how they came into our everyday habits and customs.\u00a0In this article we will reveal the reason why the Veneto capital was, and still is, called this way.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Venice once was one of the four maritime republics<\/strong>: the institutions of its government were divided on several levels, the highest one was represented by the\u00a0Doge<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He was the highest political office and embodied the glory and authority of the Republic. His powers, however, were limited to driving the army and the fleet into wars;\u00a0full sovereignty in fact resided in the Maggior Consiglio<\/strong>, a fundamental organ of the state.<\/p>\n

Although the Doge played a minor role compared to other organizations in the Republic,\u00a0he was given the nickname of \u201cserenissimo\u201d.<\/strong>\u00a0This is indeed one of the possible hypotheses that respond to the riddle we tried to solve in this article.\u00a0It seems that the title given to the doge was then taken as a cue by the city itself!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

But there is a second school of thought according to which the Maritime Republic would become the \u201cSerenissima\u201d. The Venetian Republic was in fact\u00a0a solid institution that reigned the seas uncontested<\/strong>\u00a0thanks to its nautical skills and political vanguard.<\/p>\n

In addition to being thriving for the wealth it held, it is said that\u00a0Venice was particularly tolerant of foreigners<\/strong>who came to the city for commercial reasons. Thanks to the incorruptible justice system in force at the time,\u00a0a true climate of peace and serenity<\/strong>\u00a0was established in the city, for which the lagoon would continue to boast this name in the centuries that followed.<\/p>\n

There is therefore no certainty about the real reason why Venice was nicknamed the \u201cSerenissima\u201d, even if the most quoted is that which sees it connected to the idea of \u200b\u200bthe doge nicknamed in the same way.<\/p>\n

One thing is certain: now that the arcane has been semi-unveiled, don\u2019t you feel a little more \u201cserene\u201d?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Vi siete mai chiesti perch\u00e8 Venezia, la citt\u00e0 galleggiante per eccellenza, \u00e8 da sempre soprannominata la \"Serenissima\"? <\/span><\/h3>\r\n

Molto spesso siamo soliti utilizzare parole o modi di dire senza chiederci come siano entrati nei nostri usi e costumi quotidiani. In questo articolo vi sveleremo il motivo per cui il capoluogo veneto era ed \u00e8 tuttora definito in questo modo.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/h3>\r\n

Un tempo quella di Venezia era una delle quattro Repubbliche marinare<\/strong>: le istituzioni del suo governo erano suddivise su pi\u00f9 livelli, il pi\u00f9 alto rappresentato dal Doge<\/strong><\/u><\/a>.<\/span> Egli era il massimo ordinamento politico e incarnava la gloria e l'autorevolezza della Repubblica. I suoi poteri erano per\u00f2 limitati al guidare in guerra l'esercito e la flotta; la piena sovranit\u00e0 infatti risiedeva nel Maggior Consiglio<\/strong>, organo fondamentale dello stato.<\/span> Anche se il Doge giocava un ruolo minore rispetto alle altre organizzazioni della Repubblica, gli era stato attribuito l'appellativo di \"serenissimo\"<\/strong>. \u00c8 infatti questa una delle possibili ipotesi che rispondono all'enigma che abbiamo cercato di risolvere in quest'articolo. Pare che dal titolo dato al doge prendesse poi spunto quello della citt\u00e0 stessa! :)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Vi \u00e8 per\u00f2 una seconda scuola di pensiero secondo cui la Repubblica marinara sarebbe diventata la \"Serenissima\". Quella veneziana era infatti una solida istituzione che regnava incontrastata sui mari<\/strong> grazie alle abilit\u00e0 nautiche e all'avanguardia politica che possedeva. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Oltre ad essere florida<\/strong> per la ricchezza che deteneva, si narra che Venezia fosse particolarmente tollerante verso gli stranieri<\/strong> che si recavano in citt\u00e0 per motivi commerciali. Grazie all' incorruttibile sistema di giustizia in vigore all\u2019epoca, si era quindi instaurato in citt\u00e0 un vero clima di pace e serenit\u00e0, per il quale la laguna avrebbe continuato a vantare anche nei secoli successivi tale appellativo. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n

Non vi \u00e8 quindi una certezza sul reale motivo per cui Venezia vanti l'appellativo di \"Serenissima\", anche se il pi\u00f9 quotato \u00e8 quello che la vede connessa all'idea del doge soprannominato allo stesso modo. <\/span> Una cosa per\u00f2 \u00e8 certa: adesso che l'arcano \u00e8 stato semi-svelato, non vi sentite un po\u2019 pi\u00f9 \"sereni\"? :)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n
