Hey Ghostbusters\u2026 there\u2019s work for you!<\/strong>\u00a0Jokes aside, a few steps away from Venice, there has been for centuries one of the most wretched and disturbing places in Italy: we\u2019re talking about\u00a0the island of Poveglia.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Scaredy cats that we are, we still haven\u2019t set our feet on it, but let\u2019s say we will be scheduling a tour in the upcoming months \u2026\u00a0when we gain more courage!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

What has been lying for centuries behind this mysterious place?<\/strong>\u00a0What is the story of this perfect horror movie location? We will soon reveal you all its secrets.<\/p>\n

Poveglia Island: historical roots<\/h3>\n

First of all, a couple of historical and geographic facts:<\/strong>\u00a0the island, as\u00a0Wikipedia<\/a>\u00a0tells us, is located to the south of the Venetian coast, along the Orfano canal, in the lagoon stretch between the Serenissima and the port of Malamocco.\u00a0Today it is an uninhabited island<\/strong>, abandoned to the erosion of the sea and to the nature that has taken over the ruins of the few remaining buildings.<\/p>\n

Unavailable to tourists, this bewitched place has not always been wrapped up by oblivion:\u00a0from 800 on<\/strong>, after the Venice Doge was killed by Pietro Tardonico, it became\u00a0a sort of a reception center for the families of his 200 faithful servants.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 1379<\/strong>, when war broke out between the two maritime republics of Genoa and Venice, thanks to its strategic position,\u00a0Poveglia became a military outpost;<\/strong>\u00a0all the civilians who lived there were therefore forced to abandon it. From that moment on, the island began to decline and had\u00a0the most awkward and impressive functions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Poveglia Island: from outpost to lazzaretto<\/h3>\n

And we arrive at the most terrible moment.<\/strong>\u00a0In 1700, in Venice, the black plague broke out, a terrible disease that in the very beginning began to reap thousands of victims. The Magistrate of Health then disposed that\u00a0all the corpses of the dead were carried on the island of Poveglia<\/strong>\u00a0to be burned and buried in common trenches.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, however, the measure extended to the infected: Poveglia became\u00a0a quarantine site<\/strong>, where still living individuals were brought to die outside Venice.\u00a0Men, women and children died slowly, consumed by the disease<\/strong>; in fact, their bodies are still lying under the ground.<\/p>\n

Poveglia Island: from lazzaretto to asylum<\/h3>\n

While the most strange legends about the island\u2019s evil aura matured,\u00a0in 1922 a mysterious building was erected<\/strong>whose function is still wrapped in the shadows. What was this building?<\/p>\n

Even though the archives tell us it was a quiet retirement home for the elderly, the sign which can still be read today on the entrance walls doesn\u2019t lie:\u00a0\u201cpsychiatric ward\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The asylum was dismantled in 1946, but during the years of its activity\u00a0there were many disturbing sightings and appearances.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Poveglia Island: legends<\/h3>\n

From the old registers and above all from the requests for transfers to other hospitals, it seems that the hospitalized patients\u00a0were persecuted and tormented by the souls of those who died of plague<\/strong>. Being branded as mentally ill, their tales were never taken into account and indeed, they became probably a pretext for submitting them to\u00a0sadistic sessions and experiments.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The legend continues and also engages its director, who had supposedly subjected his patients to\u00a0the cruel practices of lobotomy<\/strong>, making holes in their skulls for \u201ctherapeutic\u201d purposes. An evocative story ending with his death: like all the other patients, he was probably\u00a0the victim of the restless spirits of the island that made him go crazy<\/strong>\u00a0to such an extent that he committed suicide. One nurse told that his death was not caused by the fall, but by a misty cloud propagated from the ground that would have choked him.<\/p>\n

Poveglia Island: Strange Presences<\/h3>\n

The abandonment of the asylum marks the end of the island\u2019s \u201cofficial\u201d story.<\/strong>\u00a0Since then, it has remained uninhabited and all those who went to visit it came back with frightening testimonies of\u00a0rumors, lamentations, and strange appearances.<\/strong>\u00a0A wealthy family who decided to buy it in the 1960s preferred to leave the site because they were terrified by the spirits of the lepers. Even the team of parapsychologists from the TV series\u00a0\u201cGhost Adventures\u201d shot an episode on the island of Poveglia<\/strong>\u00a0to investigate all the mysteries that surround this damned place.<\/p>\n

So many questions arise, fueling the story of one of the most terrifying places on the Peninsula. Why did the archives make it seem a quiet retirement for the elderly for years? And, more importantly,\u00a0what is hidden under Poveglia\u2019s ground?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Da fifoni quali siamo, non abbiamo avuto ancora l\u2019occasione di metterci piede, ma diciamo che il tour \u00e8 in programma per i prossimi mesi<\/strong>...quando acquisteremo maggiore coraggio! :)<\/span><\/p>

Cosa si cela dietro a questo luogo misterioso da secoli?<\/strong> Qual \u00e8 la storia di quella che sarebbe la location perfetta per un film horror? Ti sveleremo pian piano tutti i suoi segreti.<\/span><\/p>

Isola di Poveglia: le radici storiche<\/h3>

Innanzitutto, qualche info storica e geografica: <\/strong>l\u2019isola, come ci segnala anche Wikipedia<\/u><\/a>, si trova a sud della costa veneziana, lungo il canal Orfano, nel tratto di laguna tra la Serenissima e il porto di Malamocco. Oggi \u00e8 un\u2019isola disabitata, abbandonata all\u2019erosione del mare e alla natura<\/strong> che prende sempre di pi\u00f9 il sopravvento sulle rovine dei pochi edifici rimasti.<\/span><\/p>

Inaccessibile ai turisti, questo luogo stregato non \u00e8 sempre stato avvolto dall\u2019oblio: a partire dall\u2019 800<\/strong>, dopo l\u2019uccisione del doge di Venezia Pietro Tardonico, divenne una sorta di centro di accoglienza per le famiglie dei 200 servi a lui fedeli.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Nel 1379<\/strong>, quando scoppi\u00f2 la guerra tra le due repubbliche marinare di Genova e Venezia, grazie alla sua posizione strategica, Poveglia si trasform\u00f2 in un avamposto militare<\/strong>: tutti i civili che la abitavano furono perci\u00f2 costretti ad abbandonarla. Da quel momento in poi, l\u2019isola cominci\u00f2 ad andare in decadimento e ad assolvere alle funzioni pi\u00f9 scomode e <\/strong><\/span>impressionanti.<\/strong><\/p>

Isola di Poveglia: da avamposto a lazzaretto<\/h3>

E arriviamo al momento della storia pi\u00f9 tremendo<\/strong>. Nel 1700, infatti, a Venezia scoppi\u00f2 la peste nera, un morbo terribile che nel giro di pochissimo cominci\u00f2 a mietere migliaia di vittime. Il magistrato della Sanit\u00e0 dispose perci\u00f2 che tutti i cadaveri dei morti<\/strong> fossero condotti sull\u2019isola di Poveglia per essere bruciati e sepolti in fosse comuni. <\/span><\/p>

Successivamente, per\u00f2, il provvedimento si estese anche ai contagiati: Poveglia divent\u00f2 un luogo di quarantena<\/strong>, dove individui ancora vivi venivano condotti a morire fuori da Venezia. Uomini, donne e bambini morirono lentamente, consumati dalla malattia; sotto terra, infatti, giacciono ancora a distanza di secoli i corpi di questi appestati.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Isola di Poveglia: da lazzaretto a manicomio<\/h3>

Veniamo ai giorni nostri. Come ti senti, sei svenuto? Resta con noi ancora un attimo, ora viene il bello!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Mentre attorno all\u2019isola maturavano le pi\u00f9 strane leggende sulla sua aura malefica, nel 1922 venne eretto un misterioso edificio<\/strong> la cui funzione \u00e8 ancora avvolta nell\u2019ombra. Di cosa si trattava? <\/span><\/p>

Anche se dagli archivi risultava una tranquilla casa di risposo per anziani, la scritta che si legge ancora oggi sulle pareti d\u2019ingresso non mente: \u201creparto psichiatria\u201d.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Il manicomio venne smantellato nel 1946, ma durante gli anni di attivit\u00e0 si verificarono molti avvistamenti e presenze inquietanti.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Isola di Poveglia: le leggende<\/h3>

Dai registri dell\u2019epoca e soprattutto dalle richieste di trasferimento in altri ospedali, sembra, infatti, che i malati ricoverati nell\u2019ospedale venissero perseguitati e tormentati dalle anime dei morti di peste.<\/strong> Essendo bollati come malati di mente, i loro racconti non vennero mai presi in considerazione e anzi, divennero probabilmente pretesto per sottoporli a sadiche sedute ed esperimenti.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

La leggenda continua e coinvolge anche il suo direttore, che si dice sottoponesse i pazienti alla crudele pratica della lobotomia<\/strong>, praticando loro dei fori nel cranio per scopi \u201cterapeutici\u201d. <\/span><\/p>

Una storia suggestiva che si conclude con la sua morte: anche lui, come tutti gli altri pazienti fu probabilmente vittima degli spiriti irrequieti dell\u2019isola che lo fecero impazzire<\/strong> a tal punto da istigarlo al suicidio. Un\u2019infermiera raccont\u00f2 che la morte non fu causata dalla caduta, ma da una nebbiolina propagata dal suolo che l\u2019avrebbe soffocato. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Isola di Poveglia: le strane presenze<\/h3>

L\u2019abbandono del manicomio segna anche la fine della storia \u201cufficiale\u201d dell\u2019isola. Da allora essa \u00e8 rimasta disabitata<\/strong> e tutti coloro che hanno deciso di visitarla sono ritornati con testimonianze raggelanti di voci, lamenti e apparizioni di strane figure.<\/strong> Anche una famiglia benestante che decise di acquistarla negli anni Sessanta prefer\u00ec abbandonare il sito perch\u00e8 terrorizzata dagli spiriti degli appestati. Perfino l\u2019equipe di parapsicologi della serie tv \u201cGhost Adventures\u201d ha girato un episodio sull\u2019isola di Poveglia<\/strong> per indagare su tutti i misteri che aleggiano attorno a questo luogo maledetto. <\/span><\/p>

Tante domande si fanno spazio, alimentando la storia di uno dei luoghi pi\u00f9 terrificanti della Penisola. Perch\u00e8 per anni gli archivi l\u2019hanno fatto passare come un tranquillo ricovero per anziani? E, fatto ancora pi\u00f9 importante, cosa si nasconde sotto il terreno di Poveglia?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>
